Waterford Walls delivers an annual large scale public art festival which transforms and regenerates urban spaces. Our mission since 2014 is to improve the lives of people and connect communities through the festivals street art, transforming Waterford City into Ireland’s largest open air gallery.
Central to our vision is the transformative power of urban art, how it enlivens spaces and inspires people. Street art is a truly democratic artform, making art accessible to all.
Waterford Walls inspires people and uses artistic expression to enrich their lives and to improve the social and economic health of the greater community.
Since 2021 we have developed a Digital Arts Programme in collaboration with Bepart and the Brightening Air Festival: digitising and animating our mural artworks using augmented reality. This was done through a series of workshops with secondary schools and universities, where young people learned how to photograph, digitise and animate these artworks into a free-to-download Waterford Walls Augmented Reality App.
We started our journey by digitising 8 murals, but this exciting project is only beginning, as we have over 100 more murals in the city, and we look forward to bringing many of them at your fingertips through your phone.
So how does it work?
Download the Waterford Walls Augmented Reality App
Open the App, choose an artwork on the map, make your way to the mural and begin the experience!
Using the app, hold up your phone to see the wall move before your very eyes! The artwork will come to life on your phone screen, with new shapes, sounds and colours.
The app also works with GPS: Activate the location on your phone and get ready to discover all of the digitised artworks in your area.
Dont forget to capture your favourite moments! Take photos of your experience with the app and share them on all your social media platforms and tag #MAUAWaterfordWalls
